Subject Title
Eyeglass Fabrication Lab II

Subject Description
This subject expands on the theory and practice included in Eyeglass Fabrication Lab I and introduces students to finishing segmented bifocal and progressive lenses. Through tutorial and hands-on practice, students to become proficient in finishing spectacles at an advanced level.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Opticianry Diploma.

1. Use protocols for handling hazardous materials and the principles of infection control to
assure safety.
1.1 Identify the potential hazardous materials and liquids, including flying hazards in the
eyeglass dispensing lab.
1.2 Discuss Eyeglass dispensing/fabrication lab protocols to assure lab safe environment.
1.3 Revise the first aid measures and the importance of wearing protective eyeglasses
when edging.
1.4 Revise the safety and infection control requirements as stated in COO Standard of
Practice.

2 Select eyeglass lenses in conformity with the work order.
2.1 Verify the work order for completeness of information on lenses, frame and required
measurements.
2.2 Select lens availability for single vision and multifocal lenses from manufacturer charts.
2.3 Determine minimum blank size and lens base curve for single vision lenses.
2.4 Select minimum blank size for multifocal and progressive lenses from manufacturer's
centration charts.
2.5 Calculate lens vertical and horizontal decentration for multifocal lenses.

3 Measure multifocal, progressive and specialty single vision lenses using the lensometer and
spot the Major Reference Point (MRP) on the lens.
3.1 Locate and spot MPR for single vision lenses with prescribed prism.
3.2 Locate and spot single vision polarized lenses.
3.3 Locate and spot various segment size bifocal lenses considering:
3.4 Locate and spot progressive lenses based on the permanent and non- permanent
markings
3.5 Measure lens powers with both the manual and automated lensometer

4 Identify the segment placement and inset/ for bifocal and multifocal lenses.
4.1 Calculate the position of segment drop or rise
4.2 Calculate the segment inset and total inset
4.3 Use the lens protractor in the centration of the flat-top multifocal

5 Operate the edger to cut according to specifications lenses into a variety of frame styles.
5.1 Revise operating procedures, maintenance & calibration of edgers.
5.2 Prepare eyeglass order for edging
5.3 Block, edge and de-block lenses
5.4 Verify that lens power and measurements comply with order and meet ANSI
standards
5.5 Practice edging single vision, multifocal and progressive lenses in full metal and plastic
frames.

6 Verify eyeglasses parameters and measurements with work order and ANSI Standards to
decide if acceptable for dispensing.
6.1 Inspect visually the lenses for material defects.
6.2 Verify lens base curve, center and edge thickness.
6.3 Feather lenses for proper fit into the eye wire.
6.4 Insert segmented bifocals and multifocal lenses into specialized frames correcting any
misalignment or distortion.
6.5 Position eyeglasses in standard alignment
6.6 Verify lens power and accuracy of measurements compared to eyeglass order and
against ANSI standards.
6.7 Package and prepare eyeglasses for delivery.

7 Perform lens mounting and repairs on nylon cord and rimless frames.
7.1 Discuss wearer safety issues with grooved and rimless frames
7.2 Discuss lens grooving methods including using lens edger or a lens groover.
7.3 Discuss groove position based on lens edge thickness.
7.4 Edge lenses for nylon cord and rimless frames
7.5 Mount grooved lenses into frames
7.6 Retighten loose lenses on nylon cord frames

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
