Subject Title
Project Management

Subject Description
Project management is crucial to success in every government organization. This subject is intended to provide the student with basic knowledge and skills to work as a participant within the project management framework in government.  The subject introduces the student to the elements of the Project Life Cycle within the project management framework in government, the requirements for sound project planning and leadership, and covers topics including project scope, project risks and factors for success, project reporting, communication and human resource management. This subject emphasizes team work and requires the student to work effectively in groups.
 
Part of this course will be taught in a lab where the student will gain practical experience examining the importance of measuring project results, and preparing statistical and scheduling reports using Excel; and, developing professional presentation skills using PowerPoint.

Credit Status
This is a credit course applicable towards the Public Administration Diploma Program, offered through the School of Legal and Public Administration.

  1. Describe the project life cycle, process groups, and knowledge areas as they apply in a government context.
  2. Discuss the different methodologies that are used for managing projects.
  3. Define the role of a project manager in terms of their main activities and tasks.
  4. Identify the factors that contribute to a project's success or failure in the public service environment.
  5. Explain how project changes that involve time, scope, and costs are interconnected.
  6. Formulate strategies to mitigate project risks and manage project stakeholders. 
  7. Produce project documents and reports using common business productivity software.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
