Subject Title
Disease Process

Subject Description
This course will be an introduction to human disease.  Topics include: inflammation, infection and immune disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and pathology of the endocrine, respiratory, renal and gastrointestinal systems.  In addition, the types of drugs used to treat these disorders, as well as their mechanism of action, will be investigated.  

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.         Differentiate the aetiology, physical characteristics and physiological progression of benign and malignant neoplasm. (Cognitive/Analysis)  
2.         Distinguish and discuss the following conditions of the blood and cardiovascular system: atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarct, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular accident, and anaemia. (Cognitive/Analysis)  
3.         Distinguish, discuss, and contrast the causative factors for and presenting symptoms for asthma, pneumonia, and anaphylaxis. (Cognitive/Analysis)  
4.         Compare and contrast the conditions of gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatus hernia, and peptic ulcer disease. (Cognitive/Analysis)  
5.         Categorize the conditions of the alcoholic liver, cholelithiasis, and colitis. (Cognitive/Comprehension)  
6.         Evaluate the typical presentations of seizure disorder, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and common traumatic injuries to the cranium and nervous system.  (Cognitive/Evaluation)  
7.         Differentiate the clinical manifestations of hyper- and hypothyroidism, hyper- and hyposecretion of human growth hormone, and diabetic states. (Cognitive/Analysis)  
8.         Differentiate between acute and chronic renal failure. Understand the pathophysiology and manifestations of renal calculi and cystitis.  (Cognitive/Analysis).  
9.         Analyse the integumentary disorders of psoriasis, contusion injuries and allergic dermatitis. (Cognitive/Analysis)

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
