Subject Title
Project Management

Subject Description
Introductory course providing an overview of the Construction industry and the role the Project Manager plays in the feasible and successful completion of the project. In particular, the course deals with project scheduling, contract documents, surety issued bonds, construction practices, legislation and other pertinent project management duties. Focus is also given to proper change notice pricing (stocklisting), job costing and close out documentation and obtaining substantial completion for a particular project. A term long case study group project is used to further aid students in grasping an in depth understanding and appreciation of the key aspects of a construction project, as well as the importance of team work and organization.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Be knowledgeable of how a Fire Protection company is structured, and the role a project manager has in the company.
2. Be familiar with the Standard Construction document contract and the various articles and conditions that make up the contract.
3. Knowledgeable of the Construction Lien Act, holdbacks, trust provisions and a contractor's legal rights.
4. Understand the role of the surety company and the various types of Construction Bond products offered.
5. Knowledgeable of prerequisites required to obtain bonding, as well as the structure and the content of a contract bond document.
6. Capable of completing small take-offs for the purpose of compiling a quotation / cost breakdown in accordance with the National Change Notice Procedure Guide (2001).
7. Capable of interpreting and compiling Project schedules, for the purpose of determining the Critical Path for given project tasks.
8. Capable of demonstration the various communication and organizational tools available to project managers.
9. List the required tasks and submissions required to achieve substantial performance, including the required closeout documentation for various types of projects.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
