Subject Title
Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation Skills II

Subject Description
This course is the last of three courses that will address the theory and practical components specific to physical and occupational therapy. Theory and skills include: Ergonomics and activity analysis, activity adaptation, self-care, orthotics and assistive devices, and formulating treatment plans from assessments.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Examine the scope of practice and principles of occupational therapy and the role of the occupational therapy assistant in this realm of health care including their role in a biomechanical approach to rehabilitation, with an emphasis on the theory and practice of ergonomics in daily living.   2. Perform a physical examination to assess acuity, visual fields, visual loss, accommodation, and eye movement.  Evaluate the findings and make recommendations. (Cognitive/Evaluation)
  3. Discuss the sensory component of the nervous system with an emphasis on: light touch, pain (pin prick), vibration, and joint position. (Cognitive/Comprehension)
  4. Given a case, evaluate the integrity of the motor component of the nervous system through the following physical examinations: drift, coordination, posture, muscle tone, muscle power, reflexes, abnormal movement. (Cognitive/Evaluation)
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of a client's cognitive function using appropriate evaluative techniques for: personal orientation, concentration, registration of new data, memory, consolidation and recall. (Cognitive/Application)
  6. Design appropriate therapeutic techniques to assist the client with acquired brain and spinal cord injuries and for the client with degenerative brain disorders. Considerations might include assistance for ADL, exercises for strength, flexibility, gait and balance. (Cognitive/Synthesis)
  7. Formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for physical rehabilitation and outcome oriented behavioral and physical goals.  Consider the following components and why those particular tools would be appropriate: mechanisms to enhance ADL, assistive devices, activities for balance and gait, exercises for safe ambulation and movement, efficiency of movement, muscle strength and flexibility, pain management, complimentary therapies (i.e.: acupuncture, tai chi, yoga, qi gong, etc.), pain management, techniques for memory retention, concentration, decision making, and attention, education about the disorder for the client and family, client journaling.   8. Recommend appropriate means for evaluating the progress of treatment. Incorporate subjective and objective observations, goals met, journal analysis, feedback by others in the health care team and client's family, and reassessment of goals. (Cognitive/ Evaluation)

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
