Subject Title
Applied Research Paper in Therapeutic Recreation

Subject Description
This course will focus on the development and successful completion (meets the program degree criteria) of an applied research paper carried out under the direct supervision of an appropriate member of the faculty.  Research papers will be based on the research proposals developed in the Research, Methods and Statistical Analysis course and be based on a field-relevant question and an appropriate methodology. Projects will attempt to contribute to the field by further developing research documented in the literature or propose a new direction for further research. Such papers will include a review of the literature (including the foundational work and theoretical components upon which the study is based), definitions of key terms and concepts, field and social relevance of the study, statement of methodology, a discussion of the ethical safeguards taken with human subjects, biases and assumptions, presentation of field and/or lab data, analysis and interpretation of the date, statement of the applied/practical implications, summary and implications for future research, an abstract and works cited and consulted. Students will also be required to present their findings to the field (college community or conference presentation, publication, community seminar, etc.).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Prepare a well-designed, clearly organized, and carefully designed research paper that further develops the existing research in the field and/or takes the field in a new direction and that includes a broad literature review of relevant materials that includes journals, texts, theses, and dissertations, or results of the data collection and analysis and interpretation, a clear and logical statement of findings, and a summary of findings and recommended directions for future study. 2. Conduct a research project that collects primary or secondary data related to a defensible research question, using a relevant research methodology, and applied in an ethical, professional, and academically sound manner.

3. Explain the relevance of the research to the community through the written research piece as well as through a presentation of the findings. This can be carried out through a presentation at a workshop, delivery of a paper at a conference, a seminar to students, publication in a journal, or another form to be negotiated with the professor. 4. Employ a holistic approach to research and analysis that includes an appropriate breadth and depth of theory, a clear connection to action/work in the field, and the student's ability to be reflective. (Cognitive/Synthesis)

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
