Computer Graphics for Television I

Subject Description
Over the past 20 years, computer graphics has come to dominate film, TV and special effects production. With the sophisticated tools available, studios and producers rely on special effects artists, compositors and animators to complete many of their shots. This subject is the first of two that provides the students with the focused knowledge and understanding of computer graphics and the process of creating animation and special effects. Students will learn the intricate process of 3D modeling and animation for standalone graphics as well as to incorporate into live action footage. Due to the intense digital nature of this subject, students are strongly encouraged to advance their computer skills outside the class, so they can focus on learning the techniques and practice with the tools in class. This subject is presented as an actual production environment where a project must be completed within set deadlines while utilizing available resources. Students are responsible for meeting deadlines and will be evaluated based on their projects technical and creative results. The second phase of this subject will be taught in the fourth semester that will include in-depth training for compositing (Visual Special Effects).

  1. Produce and utilize 2D textures for 3D models.
  2. Construct 3D models utilizing 2D graphics.
  3. Animate 3D models.
  4. Utilize basic lighting techniques within 3D scenes.
  5. Produce pre-production storyboards for animated sequences.
  6. Correctly render animated sequences with colours calibrated for NTSC.
  7. Properly prepare animated sequences for output to 2D compositing software.
