Festivals and Trade Shows

Subject Description

Festivals are a large component of the cultural fabric of a nation. Festivals are an integral component of Event Marketing as students will learn the economic importance of Festivals, marketing and funding strategies, and best practices in Festivals planning and management. Students will learn the process of conducting a business analysis of a Festival including business planning, funding (fundraising and sponsorships), marketing and promotion strategies and tactics, managing community volunteers, and evaluating festivals. Students will develop a business plan for a Community Festival to include specific recommendations on marketing/promotion and funding strategies.  

Students will learn about Trade Show Management from a Show Organizer and Exhibitor perspective to evaluate the role of trade shows in the marketing mix. They will identify the needs of management, exhibitors and attendees which need to be met in order to produce a successful show. Students will learn the business of managing consumer and business trade shows and how to market trade shows to both exhibitors and attendees. 

 

Credit Status
One credit status will be granted upon successful completion of this subject. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain the role of festivals as an economic driver that impacts destination marketing and tourism.

2. Develop a business plan for a community festival that demonstrates a satisfactory ROI.

3. Describe the management, marketing and financial challenges of building a sustainable, and volunteer run festival.

4. Define the value proposition of consumer shows and industry trade show for the trade show organizers and exhibitors.

5. Explain the significance of location, facilities, and service contractors for festivals and trade shows.

6. Examine the phases of trade show planning in terms of time lines, key deliverables and strategic outcomes.

7. Evaluate festivals and trade shows based on relevant industry marketing and financial metrics.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
