Trade Research/Market Analysis

Subject Description
This course describes the importance of international market research and market analysis in the success of an exporting venture. Students will apply research techniques to market analysis and selection through practical experience, based on Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) recommendations and standards.

Credit Status
One credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the value and role of research in making international trade decisions.
  2. Assemble broad, strategic questions into a research "map" to guide the needs of international marketing.
  3. Identify steps in the international research process, manage basic stages of a research project and explore the issues surrounding metrics, including their formulation, function, analysis and strategic implication.
  4. Identify relevant information sources such as published sources, electronic database, networking, focus groups, surveys.
  5. Collect and analyze data.
  6. Use metrics in analyzing research results, demonstrate knowledge of basic quantitative methods in evaluation of marketing strategies and expenditures, as well as manage productivity.
  7. Understand and describe market intelligence, compile and maintain competitor intelligence, information and data.
  8. Apply research techniques to market analysis.
  9. Use market assessments to evaluate and prioritize export markets.
  10. Understand different stages in International Marketing process (project stages).
  11. Evaluate alternative data collection techniques in terms of methodological difficulty and cost.
  12. Present the results of research and analysis in an organized, concise and comprehensive report.
  13. Acquire skills for successful team work.
