Data Analysis Tools for Business

Subject Description
Further developing the knowledge gained in SMS202 - Microcomputer Business Applications II, the student will use spreadsheet functionality to perform metrics and analysis using real business examples.  Use of database software for data mining and analysis purposes will add knowledge, skills and abilities related to business intelligence and meeting organizational objectives in a cross-disciplinary environment.

Credit Status
One credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the spreadsheet environment and concepts.
  2. Create effective documents using spreadsheet functionality and formatting.
  3. Develop spreadsheets that effectively manage data for business decision making purposes, including common metrics, analysis, formulas and functions.
  4. Use data mining capabilities found within the Pivot Table tool to organize data and extract specific business intelligence.
  5. Understand the database environment and concepts.
  6. Use database querying features to selectively extract data for specific business intelligence.
  7. Understand and demonstrate how spreadsheets and databases are interrelated and how they can be used together for various business purposes.
