Subject Title
Introductory Spanish

Subject Description
This introductory course will integrate and focus on two key components: the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Students will develop their spoken and written language skills and will have an opportunity to improve these skills while investigating the Spanish speaking regions of the world.

Credit Status
This course may serve as the required Spanish subject for the Liberal Arts Diploma Program, and may be accepted for transfer credit at the University of Toronto. It may also serve as the General Education elective credit in the Arts and Humanities category.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Demonstrate an introductory level of proficiency in written and spoken Spanish as well as in oral and reading comprehension. Specifically, students will be able to:

1. Construct simple, grammatically correct sentences that relate to present and future activities.

2. Write a grammatically correct composition of 300 words.

3. Answer, in writing and orally, questions in Spanish based on assigned reading passages.

4. Converse in basic Spanish about themselves, their studies, their families, their likes and dislikes, their leisure activities, and their future plans.

5. Discuss similarities and differences among the practices, products and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world.

6. Demonstrate proficiency, through tests and exams, in the following grammatical concepts:

-nouns and articles
-adjectives (possessive and descriptive)
-present tense of regular verbs ending in?ar, -er, -ir; stem-changing verbs; verbs with irregular first person; the -difference between the uses of ser and estar
-forming questions and expressing negation
-near future tense

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
