TCN800 - Technical Writing II

Technical Writing II builds on the basic principles of Technical Writing I. Students write more complex content that focuses on text organization, graphic design, visual elements, single-sourcing, accessibility, usability, inclusivity, and localization best practices. Students use project management techniques that include planning, designing, and managing deadlines for multiple deliverables. To simulate a common work environment, students work with subject matter experts to research and gather information for their final project.

TCN806 - Instructional Design

Today's corporate world demands frontrunners who understand how to create instructional experiences that make learning interesting, productive, and useful. This course introduces students to the concepts of instructional design and the development of eLearning for corporate training and online environments. Students collaborate to create a stand-alone web-based project. Students are taught web design strategies, storyboarding, video demos, narration, building exercises, testing retention, and ultimately create a multimedia web-based training course.

TCN807 - Document and Graphic Design

This course allows students to develop a command of design principles and production processes using a leading desktop publishing application. Content covers both the principles of document design and the practical skills of desktop publishing. Students explore graphic and visual design elements in addition to page layout, styles, themes, and graphic use. A final project incorporates all aspects of graphic design learned in the course.

TCN808 - Structured Authoring and DITA

Organizations facilitate content reuse and consistency by using structured authoring and DITA. DITA is an XML-based standard for structuring, developing, managing, and publishing content. In this course, students examine structured authoring to author and publish XML content. Students are taught a modular approach to content creation using topic-based authoring. This method allows the output of content into different formats and offers students an opportunity to design and generate documents that can be easily and efficiently assembled, published, and delivered to the intended audience.

TCN809 - Career Management

This course prepares students for launching their technical communication careers as independent contractors or self-employed professionals. Students create a downloadable portfolio that showcases their skills, qualifications, and unique brand. During the first half of the course, students complete a business plan and portfolio framework. The second half of the course focuses on constructing, evaluating, presenting, and launching their professional career plans. Students are taught how to initiate campaigns to target specific career goals

TCN810 - Web Design II

Cascading style sheets allow HTML authors to create consistent looking web pages, and helps keep the actual HTML markup clean and uncluttered. As well, by using more advanced cascading style sheet functionality, you can add some interesting and useful effects to web pages. During the first part of this course you will use cascading stylesheets exclusively to format and add effects to your web pages.
As well, we will take a look at XML. This much talked about markup language is gaining popularity in documentation for the ability to store information in a meaningful way, and the ability to re-use this information.
This course will take a hands-on approach to web page construction and design and XML authoring. Each lesson will be provided as an HTML document for viewing on web browsers. Relevant examples and links will be included in each lesson. As well, a short in-class assignment in each class will give students the opportunity to try each of the concepts discussed, while ensuring they know the basics.

TCN811 - Single Sourcing and Modular Writing

CN 811 gives students a hands-on introduction to single sourcing. Students learn to write modularly using the DITA standard, use an XML editor and a content management system to manage content, and then output content into different formats (HTML, PDF).
