Introduction to the Tourism Industry and Careers

Subject Description
Tourism is a dynamic, multi-faceted industry; it encompasses a wide spectrum of disciplines, vocations and professions. In this course, the student will have an opportunity to examine each of the segments and relevant career options within the Tourism Industry. This will assist the student in making specialty course selection within the Tourism and Travel programs at Seneca College. In addition the student will develop a number of skills and attitudes that will contribute to their success in this program, as well as in their tourism/leisure career.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Tourism and Travel Diploma Program and the Tourism-Travel Operations Certificate.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain the roles and relationships of major segments of the tourism and leisure industry, and identify career opportunities available.

2. Recall and describe, using industry terminology, the size and scope of major tourism and leisure organizations in the industry.

3. Link the type of travel and destination choices to the motivation, needs and expectations (MNEs) of different types of travellers.

4. Link destination choices to two accepted behavioural theories and relate your own preferences to these theories.

5. Explain how and why ethical behaviour is important in the tourism sector.

6. Understand and discuss the areas of responsible tourism including Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism.

7. Outline the trends and challenges in each component of the tourism industry and how they may expand or contract the industry's growth rate.

8. Develop and practice the necessary skills and behaviours to successfully complete the self and small group study activities of this subject. This will include recognizing and taking responsibility for your contribution to the groups effectiveness, using a daytimer, seeking help appropriately, identifying available resources, and giving and receiving appropriate feedback.

9. Increase your self awareness by identifying and describing personal strengths, areas for growth, and personal values and attitudes as they relate to career options.

10. Demonstrate and accept responsibility for punctuality, attendance, and the importance of courtesy and integrity in your dealings with others.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
