Leisure Education in Therapeutic Recreation

Subject Description
The goal of this specialized course is to prepare students with the required knowledge base and skill sets to work in the field of Therapeutic Recreation and in the specific area of Leisure Education. This course will focus on improving the student's understanding of the foundations, potential and effects of leisure education, systematic programming and considerations for leisure education including multiculturalism, teaching techniques, processing and adaptation. Utilizing the new knowledge learned from this course, students will then learn how to apply this information to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate leisure education programs for different populations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Apply leisure education theories and models to program planning and service delivery.
  2. Describe the effects of leisure education on clients.
  3. Analyze client needs and motivation to develop individual outcomes for clients in leisure education programs.
  4. Select leisure education intervention techniques to address the specific needs of clients.
  5. Design therapeutic recreation interventions within the scope of leisure education practice.
  6. Apply leadership skills and techniques for therapeutic interventions within leisure education practice.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
