Teaching First Nations children about fire prevention

Andrea Bondi and Andrew Boyce (pictured above) recently volunteered their time to "fire proof" school kids.

The third semester Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training students gave a presentation to a primary school in Nimbinamik — a remote First Nations community north of Thunder Bay.

Andrea, who once completed a teaching placement at the school there, was aware many of the children had never received fire education and wanted to change that. This need has become even more urgent because of recent house fires that have occurred in the area.

The pair visited various classrooms and discussed what to do in the event of a home fire. As part of their presentations, Andrea and Andrew also had the children create home fire safety plans. The students plan to visit other First Nations schools in the fall to spread their fire safety message.
