Chinese Basic Courses

Overview

Chinese - Basic courses (Levels 1- 6) are for students who have limited knowledge of the Chinese language and cannot read Chinese Pinyin or basic Chinese characters. In these courses, students learn to conduct simple, everyday conversations. As Chinese language skills improve, students begin to work on short and simple text, basic grammar, sentence structure and everyday phrases.

Chinese - Basic 1 (LGB081)

In this course, students learn Pinyin in Mandarin - the foundational structure of the Chinese language – as well as common greetings and introductions. They will also learn about cultural practices. Chinese – Basic 1 is open to those who have no Chinese language knowledge and would like to improve their communication skills in Chinese.

Chinese - Basic 2 (LGB082)

Chinese – Basic 2 is a continuation of Chinese – Basic 1. Students are encouraged to express themselves and learn the language through classroom activities. The class also covers cultural practices related to daily activities and etiquette. Chinese – Basic 2 is for those who can read about 30 Chinese characters or 50 words as well as basic sentences in Chinese.

Chinese - Basic 3 (LGB085)

Chinese - Basic 3 is a continuation of Chinese – Basic 2. This course aims to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of the course, students should be able to master more than 30 Chinese characters or 50 words and have a good command of basic grammar, sentence structure, and Mandarin pronunciation. Students are encouraged to actively communicate in class and will also learn the language through classroom activities.

Chinese - Basic 4 (LGB086)

Chinese - Basic 4 is a continuation of Chinese – Basic 3. This course aims to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It will also help them to increase their knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to speak freely in class and develop their language skills through classroom activities. By the end of this course, students should be able to read more than 30 Chinese characters and 80 words and have a good command of basic grammar, sentence patterns and Mandarin pronunciation.

Chinese - Basic 5 (LGB087)

Chinese - Basic 5 is a continuation of Chinese - Basic 4. This course aims to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It will also help them to increase their knowledge of Chinese language, grammar and vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to speak freely in class and develop their language skills through classroom activities. By the end of this course, students should be able to read more than 40 Chinese characters and 80 words and have a good command of basic grammar, sentence patterns and Mandarin pronunciation.

Chinese – Basic 6 (LGB088)

Chinese - Basic 6 is a continuation of Chinese - Basic 5. This course aims to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It will also help them to increase their knowledge of Chinese language, grammar and vocabulary. Students will be encouraged to speak freely in class and develop their language skills through classroom activities. By the end of this course, students should be able to read more than 50 Chinese characters and 80 words and have a good command of basic grammar, sentence patterns and Mandarin pronunciation. In this course, students will have the opportunity to review grammar and sentences at the basic level in order to prepare for future classes.

Intensive Basic Chinese 1 (LGB083)

This class covers the foundational structure of the Chinese language including simple Chinese sentences and tonal structure. Students also learn basic vocabulary for greetings, simple introductions, and common phrases. This class is open to those with very little to no Chinese language proficiency.
