Program Description

The Public Relations - Investor Relations (IRM) Program is an intensive learning experience that prepares its graduates to help companies listed on public stock exchanges to establish constructive, ethical relationships with their shareholders and other investors, and with financial analysts and with the financial - and investment media. The Program combines five first-semester subjects from Seneca’s Public Relations - Corporate Communications (PRC) Program with nine specialized Investor Relations subjects including Introduction to Investor Relations, Financial Literacy, Crisis Management and Communications, Going Public, Ethics & Professionalism and four others (see courses section).

After completing the IRM Program, graduates are ready to assume entry-level jobs as investor relations practitioners with publicly traded companies in the financial services, natural resources and manufacturing sectors, with investor relations consultancies, with the financial communications and corporate communications arms of public relations agencies, with associations and organizations that regulating capital markets, and as financial communicators in the corporate communications and public relations divisions of publicly traded companies.

Seneca College is the only educational institution in Ontario offering a full-fledged, entry-level program in Investor Relations. The IRM Program addresses a demonstrated need for individuals trained to practice in this specialized area of communications. The Canadian Investor Relations Institute (CIRI) represents hundreds of investor relations professionals who work with publicly listed companies, and with associations: IR and PR agencies. CIRI has established education and training in the IR disciplines as one of its a top priorities. Seneca's IRM Program helps to address this need.

The IRM Program provides the opportunity to learn from a very experienced faculty, from practical hands-on exercises, and through group activities with other students. The program is career-focused. It emphasizes practical learning in an environment that provides access to an unusual combination of professional and academic resources.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

  • A recognized degree or three-year post-secondary diploma from an accredited institution.
  • English proficiency at the post-secondary level.

Additional Requirements:

  • Statement of interest
  • Writing test

Applicant Selection:

  • Applicants will be invited to attend an orientation session where they will complete the writing test and submit their statement of interest.
  • If the program is oversubscribed - more qualified applicants than seats in the program - applicants will be selected on the strength of their writing test.

IRM Program graduates will be prepared for entry-level jobs as investor relations practitioners with publicly traded companies, investor relations consultancies, the investor relations arms of public relations agencies, and with associations and organizations involved in regulating capital markets. They will also be trained to work as financial communicators in the corporate communications and public relations divisions of publicly traded companies.

Transfer Credit/Pathways

The Degree and Credit Transfer Office provides a number of services for students continuing their education at Seneca, and for graduating students considering degree transfer options.

Through transfer agreements and institution partnerships, graduates of this Seneca College program may be eligible for credit at various post-secondary institutions. Please refer to the Degree Transfer Guide for more information.

Transfer Credit may be granted for courses deemed equivalent to courses at Seneca that have been completed at recognized postsecondary institutions. Additional information is available online.
