To promote Fire Safety Week, a demonstration of how fire can spread through a dorm room was held at Seneca's Newnham Campus on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Two sample rooms were set ablaze to compare rooms with and without sprinklers. The event, held by the School of Fire Protection and Seneca's Residences, was covered by CTV News throughout the noon newscast. Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training students are shown extinguishing the fire set in the room without a sprinkler.
Four hundred students witnessed first-hand how quickly a fire spreads, and the safety measures to take in the event of a fire. Seneca student Connor Johnston said, “Seeing a live burn up close and personal is so much more intense than any textbook or safety plan could teach us.” Other events included supplementary workshops educating students living at the campus residence on the safe operation of fire safety equipment.
