Remembrance Day at Seneca

Past ceremonies have included tributes from war veterans and Royal Canadian Air Force students.


Remembrance Day is marked each year on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour. At that time, Canada observes two minutes of silence for the men and women who have defended and continue to defend our country and our freedom.

Ceremonies on campus

Everyone is welcome to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies at Seneca's main campuses on Friday, Nov. 9. at 10:45 a.m.

    • King Campus: Event Space, Magna Hall
    • Markham Campus: Atrium
    • Newnham Campus: Cenotaph (North of Parking Lot 2)

Flags at half-mast

Flags at Seneca’s campuses will be flown at half-mast from sunrise on Friday, Nov. 9 to sunset on Sunday, Nov. 11.

History of the day

The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918.

Veterans Affairs Canada and the Canadian War Museum established Remembrance Day sites that further explore the history and meaning of the day.

Remembrance Day poppies

The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for veterans. Poppies will be available throughout Seneca campuses at the following locations:
