As a graduate, you will be prepared to reliably demonstrate the ability to:

Financial Planning:

  • Analyze and explain the general provisions of mortgage loans, land title and repayment plans.
  • Examine fundamentals of investment finance, suppliers and users of investment capital, and government and corporate bonds and debentures.
  • Examine common and preferred share factors affecting securities prices, buying and selling of securities, building and managing an investment portfolio.
  • Discuss and explain the process of planning for retirement. Explain setting goals to retire in comfort and how to establish an investment plan.
  • Explain and apply a working knowledge of the Income Tax Act as it relates to Financial Planning and Investing.
  • Examine and explain the choice of investment through differential tax rates for income dividends and capital gains.
  • Explain and demonstrate the process of developing a comprehensive plan for an investor and conduct an annual review of the investor’s comprehensive plan.
  • Explain the financial planning process, financial objectives, the history of financial planning, emerging trends, financial organizations, methods of compensation, ethics and standards of practice.

Accounting:

  • Analyze and systematically record business transactions; summarize, report and interpret the results of these transactions.
  • Explain and apply accounting principles to account for assets, liabilities and owner’s equity.
  • Discuss and explain the primary concepts of cost accounting with emphasis on the costing of products and services, the structure of job-order cost systems and the budgetary process.
  • Discuss and explain the planning and control aspects of cost and management accounting systems and particular reference to standard cost systems, flexible budgets and other planning and control techniques.
  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of the Canadian Income Tax Act and of its role in planning and decision-making and its application to the taxation of individuals and corporations.
  • Discuss the concept of financial management as it relates to the optimizing of share values and the profitability of a business.

Business:

  • Explain basic economic principles and the relevance of economics to the decisions made by business and to the conditions under which firms operate.
  • Discuss the principles and problems of interactions between people and groups within organizations, the different ways in which these are effectively structured and the relationships between the organization and its environment.
  • Examine the concepts of marketing as they relate to the business environment.
  • Discuss commercial law and its impact on the conduct of operations and management decision-making.
  • Perform basic financial mathematics and statistical techniques related to applications in business.

Communications:

  • Demonstrate good oral presentation and articulation skills.
  • Demonstrate good writing skills.
  • Describe the skills necessary to locate and secure employment and to promote career advancement.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate behavioural skills for success in today’s business environment.
  • Examine and discuss ethical business practices.
