Seneca College commends government’s new Ontario Tuition Grant program.
Toronto, January 5, 2012 – Seneca College applauds today's provincial government announcement of the new Ontario Tuition Grant program, which will provide a 30 per cent tuition rebate to qualified college and university students.
"This is good news for students and their families, and it's a great way to start the year," said Seneca College President David Agnew. "This rebate will help increase access to post-secondary education across the province and complements the many supports Seneca provides to our students."
The tuition grants are targeted to assist students who are attending an Ontario public post-secondary institution for the first time, and whose parents’ income is less than $160,000 per year. To qualify for the grant, students must also be less than four years out of high school.
"The Ontario Tuition Grant program will help ease the financial struggle and the burden many students go through when attending post-secondary education," said Samir Abdi, Seneca Student Federation President. "This investment will go a long way to helping students here at Seneca and across the province achieve their career and post-secondary goals."
This January, the government is taking 30 per cent off the average tuition for families — that means a savings of $800 for undergraduate university or college degree students and $365 for college diploma and certificate students this semester. Eligible students beginning or continuing their studies in the summer semester will also receive this grant.
In September, the permanent 30 per cent off Ontario Tuition Grant will apply to the full school year. Students in a university or college degree program will save $1,600, while students in college diploma and certificate programs will save $730.
More than 300,000 students are eligible to receive the tuition grant this year. Students who already receive OSAP will have their applications submitted automatically.
