Development of a point of source assay for the detection of subclinical ketosis in dairy cows
Dairy Quality Inc., based in Newmarket, Ontario, is a solutions-based development company that provides dairy producers with affordable and reliable diagnostic tools to conduct “cow-side” (i.e. point-of-source) milk testing. Their technology platform is the “Dairy Health Check” (DHC), consisting of a portable fluorescence microscopy module that assembles onto an Apple iPod®. Integrated within this technology is a single immunoassay for somatic cell counts (SCC), used to categorize milk quality by identifying the potential of mastitis-causing organisms. Dairy Quality Inc. is collaborating with Dr. Frank Merante from Seneca’s School of Biological Science and Applied Chemistry to expand the functionality of the Dairy Quality platform by developing additional user-friendly, cost-effective, “cow-side” tests.
