Education & Industry Working Together

Seneca's new Centre for Financial Services (CFS) is unique. In the fall of 2002, the Centre launched Canada's first applied degree program in Financial Services Management. This four-year applied baccalaureate is one of four approved by the Province of Ontario for Seneca.

Founded in 2001, the Centre for Financial Services is committed to developing industry leadership and global career opportunities through quality education integrated with the newest technology. The Centre grew out of Seneca's mandate to serve Ontario's young people by preparing them for real world careers and to serve the economic goals of the larger community through the creation of a first-class workforce. Founding Director Gary Butler and his colleagues in the Faculty of Business identified a need for a new kind of employee for the financial services sector - a specialist with an understanding of how to work in a technology-driven global environment characterized by lightening speed regulatory changes and a job-ready graduate with the capacity to be a life-long learner.

The Centre for Financial Services opened in the fall of 2002 at Seneca's largest campus, Newnham Campus, home to Seneca's Faculty of Business and 7,500 students. Financed in part by the Ontario Government's SuperBuild Growth Fund, the 58,000 square foot building is equipped with state-of-the-art wireless communications and computer networking technology.

The Centre for Financial Services offers diplomas and certificate programs in Insurance, Client Contact Centre Management, Forensic Accounting and Financial Compliance Administration. Qualified graduates of these programs are eligible to pursue accreditation in programs of the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA), the Financial Planning Standard Council (CFP), the Canadian Securities Institute, the Life Office Management Association (LOMA), the Institute of Canadian Bankers, the Call Centre Industry Advisory Council, and the Insurance Institute of Canada. In September 2002, Seneca's Centre for Financial Services began offering Canada's first Applied Bachelor's Degree in Financial Services Management.
