What is the test

The CAT3 level 19 test (Canadian Achievement Test) is a normalized, validated test that has been administered to thousands of Canadian students. Information is available at:

Is this test a condition of acceptance?

No. The results will not affect your admission to the college

Is this test a condition of placement?

Yes. Raw scores (the number of correct answers on the CAT3 Mathematics Assessment) of less than 20 indicate that you will be required to complete MTH148, Foundations of Technical Mathematics. This subject may be completed concurrently in the first semester of your program.

When should I write the test?

It is very important that the test is completed as soon as possible. Once the results are available, they are used to assist in creating your semester one timetable.

Please note that you will need to present photo identification when you arrive to write the test. As well, you will need your Seneca Student Identification Number and pen, pencil and eraser.

How can I prepare for this test?

The test will take 40 minutes. It is a paper based test consisting of 30 multiple choice. Dictionaries and calculators are not allowed. Try the practice questions provided in the column on the right of this page.

Do I get to see my score?

Yes. The results will be sent by mail to you by the Seneca Test Centre (pending time allowances).

Who do I contact if I have questions regarding my mathematics placement?

You should contact your Student Advisor or Program Coordinator, who will look at your test results and post secondary school mathematics background to arrive at a decision.
