What is Externship Placement all about?
An Externship Placement is a six month placement that will assist you in applying the theory you learn in school in the hospitality sector. It is expected that the placement will be paid, and results in valuable work experience which you will bring back with you to enhance your learning in the remainder of your program. Your work experience will directly complement your learning as you will have gained real life work experience that you will be able to apply directly to your course work prior to your graduation. An Externship Placement is an opportunity to gain vital work experience, develop professional contacts within the industry, and enhance your résumé while studying. Students who successfully complete the program with an Externship Placement will graduate with a Hospitality Management Diploma.
How does it fit into my timetable?
After successful completion of semester 1 and 2, you will be timetabled for the externship placement between May and October to complete the placement.. You must complete 860 hours during the six month placement and achieve a successful Student Performance Appraisal from your employer and professor. Your professor monitors your performance and stays connected with you throughout your placement. Although, most student externship placements occur between semester 2 and 3, the option is also offered at the end of the program. All placements occur between May to October.
What are the requirements for participation in the program?
- Successful completion of all semester one and two academic credits, including COM101
Does the college find you a job?
The college and your professor will help you to develop the skills need to find a job through the Career Preparation course offered in semester two. It is your ultimate responsibility to complete the job search process and obtain your own job. You will have access to the EXTERNSHIP PLACEMENT EMPLOYER DATABASE to aid you in your search. The job search process, leading to a successful placement, is a great piece of the learning for Field Placement students. It becomes a great confidence builder for you.
What kind of placement will I get and where?
Our experience has been that placements can be found in and outside of the GTA. Students have found placements in every sector of the hospitality industry from as near as their local neighbourhood to across Canada and around the globe. Regardless of the position or location, you will develop many transferable skills. Some of our recent Field Placement Employers included: Comfort Inn, Hilton Hotels, Kingbridge Centre, Radisson Hotel Markham, Sheraton Parkway Hotel, Hilton Suites Markham, Angus Glen Golf Club and Conference Centre, Donalda Club.
