Field Placement Frequently Asked Questions

What is Field Placement all about?

A Field Placement will assist you in relating the theory you learn in school, to practice in the field of tourism. It is usually an unpaid placement, and results in valuable work experience prior to your graduation. Field Placement is an opportunity to gain vital work experience, develop professional contacts within the industry, and enhance your résumé while studying. Students who successfully complete the program with a Field Placement Option will graduate with a Tourism and Travel Diploma.

How does it fit into my timetable?

In your 4th semester, you will be timetabled for classes, three days a week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The remaining two days per week, usually Thursday and Friday, are set aside for your field placement. You must complete 150 hours during this 14-week semester and achieve a successful Student Performance Appraisal. Although, most field placements occur in the Winter Semester running from January to April, the option is also offered in the summer and fall semesters when there are a sufficient number of students.

What are the requirements for participation in the program?

  • You must be a fourth semester student
  • Successful completion of all semester one and two academic credits, including COM101
  • Successful completion of all 3rd semester professional subjects required for your stream.

Does the college find you a job?

The college and your professor will help you to develop the skills need to find a job through the Career Preparation course offered in semester three. It is your ultimate responsibility to complete the job search process and obtain your own job. You will have access to the FIELD PLACEMENT EMPLOYER DATABASE to aid you in your search. The job search process, leading to a successful placement, is a great piece of the learning for Field Placement students. It becomes a great confidence builder for you.

What kind of placement will I get and where?

Our experience has been that most placements are inside the GTA. Students have found placements in every sector of the tourism and hospitality industry. Regardless of the position or location, you will develop many transferable skills.
