What is co-op all about?

Co-op education will assist you in relating the theory you learn in school, to practice in the field of tourism. It will enable you to “learn while you earn”, and results in a well-developed career plan before graduation. We all hear experience is necessary to obtain a job. Co-op is an opportunity to gain vital work experience, develop professional contacts within the industry, and enhance your résumé while studying. You must complete 455 hours during this 14-week semester and have a successful Student Performance Appraisal.

What can co-op do for me as a student?

Co-op can give you the opportunity to obtain hands-on practical experience. It assists with career planning, job search skills, and networking, and will show you the skills you will require for a career after school. It can also give you “the edge” in a competitive job situation. Co-op placements often lead to full-time employment.


What are the requirements for participation in the program?

  • Successful completion of all four semesters
  • A 3.0 Grade Point Average
  • Recommendation from the Tourism Program Promotion Committee
  • Payment of a co-operative education fee
  • Completion of a “Transfer Request Form” to be considered as a candidate for co-op, in the first semester.
  • Acceptance to the co-op program will be communicated by SIRIS.

Does the College find you a job?

The College and your professor will help you to develop the skills needed to find a job through the EAC 394 program. It is your ultimate responsibility to complete the job search process and obtain your own job. You will have access to the CO-OP AND FIELD PLACEMENT EMPLOYER DATABASE to aid you in your search. The job search process, leading to a successful placement, is a great piece of the learning for co-op students. It is a huge accomplishment and, in our experience, becomes a great confidence builder for you.

What kind of placement will I get and where?

Our experience has been that about 70% of placements are outside the GTA and about 30% are outside Ontario. 80% of the co-op placements are found in the hospitality sector (hotels, resorts and food and beverage service positions) of the Tourism Industry. This is due to the demand for summer help during the peak inbound travel period. The retail travel and wholesale travel sector of the Tourism Industry is less likely to have full-time, paid summer employment, because this is traditionally a slower period for their operations. Regardless of the position and location, many transferable skills will be developed.

What is the cost for the optional co-operative education program?

All students enrolled in the co-operative education program will be charged an additional $325.00 administrative fee (subject to change) for the semester in which the work term is scheduled. This fee covers the cost of preparing students for co-op, advising and monitoring while on work term, maintaining of records, and support services. The college’s optional insurance may be added.
