Professor Paul Shecter and students from his Design for Social Change course received Community Member Awards at a ceremony held at Toronto Police Headquarters on April 27.
The awards are presented annually to members of the community to recognize unselfish acts of bravery, courage and assistance to the Toronto Police Service.
Last year, Paul’s Graphic Design students developed the official Fraud Prevention Month campaign for the Toronto Police Service. Fraud, Know It Before It Knows You! focused on educating senior citizens, their loved ones and caregivers, so they can avoid becoming victims of fraud. As part of Design for Social Change, the students created posters and other marketing collateral to support the campaign.
Paul's course focuses on creating non-commercial graphic design work. Students offer their skills to community groups for use in social awareness campaigns. Over the years, students have designed awareness campaigns about elder abuse, the dangers of guns and gangs, racism and domestic violence.
