Subject Title
Racism and Discrimination

Subject Description
Students taking this course will learn the definition of racism and discrimination, and will be able to identify the various sources of discrimination and racism resulting from cultural values and physical differences between individuals.  By identifying racism and discrimination issues in North American society, students will learn how to analyze the sociological factors that cause bias and prejudice to surface in our society.  The main objective of this course is to enhance sensitivity to and intolerance of mistreatment based on racial or ethnic background and appearance, and to consider how to handle these issues as professional individuals in a pluralistic Canadian society.  As part of the course, students will communicate with one another through electronic discussion and learn to appreciate through various readings and assignments the many facets of racism and discrimination.  This course will be of interest to workers in health services, education, human resources, and business as well as those people who want to enhance their knowledge and sensitivity to issues of racism and discrimination particularly when communicating with people from other cultures or with physical appearances that differ from their own.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Identify the mechanisms of racism and discrimination.

2. Analyze the relationship between society and discrimination in the Canadian context.

3. Become aware of their biases and challenge their own values, beliefs, and behaviours.

4. Consider the application of their learning to their life settings.

Mode of Instruction
Online: All class work is completed in a fully online environment. Students do not attend any classes on campus; however, the final exam must be written in-person at the Test Centre.

* Students interested in pursuing  online courses must have strong time management skills and regular access to a home or office computer with an Internet connection and web access.

Modes of Evaluation

To be successful in this course, you must complete all course work as specified and achieve an overall grade of 50% or higher. For further information on evaluation and academic standing, see a copy of the Academic Policy available at Seneca registration offices.

Term work:
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the final exam or last class.  Students must contact faculty in advance of the assignment due date to discuss the possibility of an extension.  Late assignments may be subject to the awarding of a penalty resulting in a lower grade assigned. 
Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date.  If an assignment is missed due to class absence, official documentation must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities may not apply to all graded assignments.
