Subject Title
Field Placement II

Subject Description
This is a continuation of FPL 330. Students are required to complete field placement in a legal work setting to apply the theory and skills they have learned during their legal studies.

Credit Status
This is a credit subject applicable towards the Law Clerk Diploma Program, offered through the School of Legal and Public Administration and the Faculty of Continuing Education.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate professionalism and good work behaviour patterns (e.g. attitude, reliability, attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, demeanour and appearance).

2. Understand the operations and functions of various components of a law office/legal department.

3. Use legal precedents, files and law libraries and particiapte in various law office/legal office procedures.

4. Prepare an employment resume according to professional legal standards.

5. Successfully attend a legal placement carrying out the duties as assigned by the employer.

  1. Prepare a resume in consultation with the Field Placement Coordinator.
  2. Complete a student questionnaire if required.
  3. Attend assigned field placement.
  4. Submit all required documentation:  Field Placement Evaluations, Privacy Act Release, and Placement  Journal.

Modes of Evaluation
Students receive a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory for the field placement. To obtain a grade of satisfactory the following is required:

1. Prepare a resume according to field placement coordinator's requirements.

2. Attendance - the student must fulfill the attendance requirements as set out in the field placement guidelines.  Failure to do so will result in a grade of unsatisfactory.

3. Punctuality - the student must, on a regular basis, arrive at the field placement employer on time and work a full business day. As set out in the field placement guidelines, persistent lateness or early departures will result in a grade of unsatisfactory.

4. Student Evaluation by Employer - the student must obtain an overall satisfactory rating from the employer. In addition, unsatisfactory ratings in areas pertaining to attitude or dependability may result in a grade of unsatisfactory.

Students must complete 20 days of field placement through the completion of FPL330 and FPL430.
Students must submit documentation to the Field Placement Coordinator in a timely manner once the Field Placement is completed.
