Promoting Resilience in Infants and Young Children Impacted by Stress and Trauma

Subject Description
Throughout this course, students will learn the causes and impacts of stress and trauma, with a specific focus on infants, young children and their families.  Acute, chronic and multigenerational sources of stress and trauma will be explored.  Existing support systems and health promotion initiatives will be discussed, with a focus developing support plans for families dealing with trauma, stress and violence.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.     Describe the effects of stress, trauma, and violence on the daily lives and brain development of infants, young children and families in a variety of sociocultural contexts.

2.     Evaluate the impact of early life adversity on physical, emotional, social, and cognitive well-being in infancy and later life.

3.     Recommend strategies that promote resilience in families with young children impacted by trauma, stress and violence.

4.     Recognize behaviours or indicators of child abuse and family violence that require an immediate professional response in accordance with child welfare laws and legislation.

5.     Conceptualize their role as an infant mental health professional when supporting families with young children impacted by stress and trauma.
