Italian Language Skills 2

Subject Description
This course is designed to further develop the students' oral communication and listening skills in the Italian language. The language is taught through the use of integrated, thematic units that stress and reinforce the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing at a low intermediate level of fluency.  Cultural awareness will be expanded by examining various aspects of Italian life and customs.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. use the Italian language for a variety of purposes and contexts, including curriculum areas;

2. apply the conventions of the language appropriately for the purpose, audience, and context;

3. develop independent and collaborative learning strategies to create practical and imaginative works in a variety of media;

4. demonstrate a cultural understanding of Italian life and customs.

Topic Outline
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES:
This subject is designed to continue the development of the four skills of  listening, speaking, reading, and writing contemporary Italian within a cultural framework.  The language is taught through the use of integrated thematic units that stress and reinforce these four skills.  By the end of the course, students will be able to listen to, speak, read, and write Italian with a basic level of fluency.

Listening Skills:
By the end of LGE212, students will be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of simple spoken Italian language appropriate to the level in a variety of practical, structured situations;
respond to simple statements, questions, and commands using vocabulary and Italian language structure appropriate to the level;
interpret Italian for conversational purposes using visual and verbal cues.

Speaking Skills:
By the end of LGE212, students will be able to:
communicate orally in various practical, structured situations and for different purposes;
continue to use standard pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and stress in words, sentences, and short passages accurately and fluently;
respond to simple messages, express opinions, and identify preferences (e,g., identify their favourite TV programs and explain the reasons for their preferences);
apply knowledge of the Italian culture in oral presentations of brief reports on a cultural topic.

Reading Skills:
By the end of LGE212, students will be able to:
read appropriate passages from various sources and for practical purposes in the Italian language;
consolidate comprehension, oral skills, and expansion of Italian vocabulary by responding to reading materials in various ways (magazine articles, brochures, travelogues);
read aloud in Italian with confidence, expression, and appropriate fluency to further develop standard pronunciation and intonation;
identify main ideas and key information in a wide range of Italian resources (books, signs, flyers, maps, menus, etc...);
identify features of the Italian culture (e.g., distinctive modes of travel).

Writing Skills:
By the end of LGE212, students will be able to:
write in Italian for different practical purposes and different audiences, using language appropriate to the level;
answer a variety of simple questions;
compose short sentences, paragraphs, and short reports, using level-appropriate vocabulary and structures.

Cultural Understanding:
At the end of LGE212, students will be able to:
identify cultural similarities and differences in customs, attitudes, and values;
recognize and explain the contributions of the Italian-speaking people to Canada and the world.

TOPIC OUTLINE

  • describe actions and events in the future and past forms, including time;
  • discuss familiar topics: weather,  travel, vacations, fashion, food, etc.;
  • compare daily routines with frequency
  • inquire about and discuss prices
  • make requests, give suggestions and advice
  • express ownership, desires, and obligations 
  • describe people and places
  • share views on cultural and other topics

Mode of Instruction

Instructors develop the listening and speaking skills of their students by using a wide range of teaching strategies (teacher-centred, student-centred, paired, and grouped activities) to meet the different learning styles of their students.
 
Students will be expected to prepare on a weekly basis for the upcoming class by reading and studying assigned text material.  In addition to the weekly classes, students should spend a minimum of three hours per week on independent study to further cement their learning.

Modes of Evaluation
To be successful in this subject, you must complete all course work as specified, and achieve an overall grade of 50% or more. For further information on evaluation and academic standing, see the Academic Policy at http://www.senecacollege.ca/academic-policy
 
Term Work:
The term work will constitute 85% of the final grade.  The instructor’s class schedule will indicate the nature of the weekly activities and assignments, their due dates, and their value.
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the examination. Unless students have been granted an extension in advance, late assignments will be penalized accordingly.  Students must contact faculty in advance of due date to discuss extensions.

Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date. If an assignment is missed due to class absence, any official documentation that might be grounds for arranging a make-up opportunity must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities do not apply to all graded assignments.

Final Examination:
The final in-class examination will constitute 15% of the final grade.

Student Success:

Attending classes, fully participating in course activities, ensuring you are prepared for class by completing assigned readings and activities, completing and handing in all required course work prior to the final exam will increase your chances of success in the course.

Appeals
Students must keep all assignments (including drafts and outlines) and exercises until they receive their final grade.

Students may appeal any final grade in a subject or any decision by the College, following the recommendation of a Promotion Committee, with respect to the student's academic standing, continuation or status in a program, School, Faculty or the College.  It is the policy of the College that a student who invokes this appeal process will be given a fair hearing.  For further information on appeals, please see Section 12 of the Academic Policy Handbook.
