Spanish Language Skills 5

Subject Description
Spanish Language Skills 5 will continue to refine and develop the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of contemporary Spanish within a cultural framework. The use of integrated, thematic units will reinforce previous language acquisition and introduce more complex structures. By the end of this course, students will demonstrate advanced ability and fluency in the four skills in the Spanish language and an increased understanding of Hispanic culture throughout the world.

Credit Status
One credit in the Spanish Language Skills Certificate. Not applicable as a general education credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. communicate in Spanish for a variety of audiences, purposes and contexts, using appropriate conventions;

2. develop independent and collaborative learning strategies to create practical and imaginative works in Spanish;

3. understand and share one’s experiences with others in Spanish;

4. demonstrate an increased cultural awareness and understanding of various Spanish-speaking regions and countries throughout the world.

Topic Outline

 Listening Skills:

Students will be able to: 

  1.  interpret Spanish to participate in conversations;
  2.  discover the main idea from oral presentations and infer meaning through available clues;
  3.  demonstrate an ability to acquire a new language.
Speaking Skills:

Students will be able to:

        1. use clear pronunciation, accurate intonation and appropriate gestures to convey meaning in Spanish;
        2. communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings on familiar topics in a spontaneous and confident manner, using appropriate vocabulary;
        3. respond appropriately to questions on familiar topics
        4. demonstrate spontaneity and confidence when expressing ideas, thoughts, and feelings;
        5. develop collaborative and independent thinking and learning strategies to create practical and imaginative works;

Reading Skills:

Students will be able to: 

  1. grasp main ideas and key information in a wide range of  resources (books, signs, flyers, maps, menus, etc...);
  2. deduce, infer, and predict meaning using textual and visual clues in resources;
  3. confidently read in Spanish.
Writing Skills:

Students will be able to: 

  1.  transcribe, take dictation, and make notes on a short text (oral and written);
  2.  express briefly and clearly facts, opinions, attitudes, emotions, and ideas for a variety of purposes;
  3.  write in Spanish on a variety of topics, using the stages of the writing process.
Cultural Understanding:

Students will be able to: 

  1.  express themselves and behave in a manner that reflects respect for Spanish-speaking cultures;
  2.  identify cultural similarities and differences in customs, attitudes, and values;
  3.  recognize and explain the contributions of the Spanish culture to Canada and the world.

Mode of Instruction

Instructors develop the listening and speaking skills of their students by using a wide range of teaching strategies (teacher-centred, student-centred, paired, and grouped activities) to meet the different learning styles of their students.
Students will be expected to prepare on a weekly basis for the upcoming class by reading and studying assigned text material.  In addition to the weekly classes, students should spend a minimum of three hours per week on independent study to further cement their learning.

Modes of Evaluation
To be successful in this subject, you must complete all course work as specified, and achieve an overall grade of 50% or more. For further information on evaluation and academic standing, see the Academic Policy at http://www.senecacollege.ca/academic-policy
Term Work:
The term work will constitute 85% of the final grade.  The instructor’s class schedule will indicate the nature of the weekly activities and assignments, their due dates, and their value.
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the examination. Unless students have been granted an extension in advance, late assignments will be penalized accordingly.  Students must contact faculty in advance of due date to discuss extensions.

Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date. If an assignment is missed due to class absence, any official documentation that might be grounds for arranging a make-up opportunity must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities do not apply to all graded assignments.

Final Examination:
The final in-class examination will constitute 15% of the final grade.

Student Success:
Attending classes, fully participating in course activities, ensuring you are prepared for class by completing assigned readings and activities, completing and handing in all required course work prior to the final exam will increase your chances of success in the course.

Students must keep all assignments (including drafts and outlines) and exercises until they receive their final grade.

Students may appeal any final grade in a subject or any decision by the College, following the recommendation of a Promotion Committee, with respect to the student's academic standing, continuation or status in a program, School, Faculty or the College.  It is the policy of the College that a student who invokes this appeal process will be given a fair hearing.  For further information on appeals, please see Section 12 of the Academic Policy Handbook.
