French Language Skills 7

Subject Description
As an extension of LGE606, French Language Skills 7 will provide students further opportunities to improve oral communication through discussions on pre-determined topics and active participation in spontaneous conversations. Topics of discussion may include social and environmental concerns in the 21st Century and the effects of technological advances in transportation and the media. The course will reinforce previously learned content and introduce more complex structures. Awareness and understanding of French culture will be expanded through examination and discussion of various print media, television, and the cinema.

Credit Status
One credit. Not applicable as a general education credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. think and respond in French when exposed to the language;

2. comprehend current French literature, including excerpts from novels, articles from French magazines and newspapers, etc.;

3. demonstrate a broadened cultural awareness and understanding of current French life;

4. communicate meaningfully in French to share experiences and express opinions and observations on various topics.

Topic Outline
This course will provide students further opportunities for discussions of pre-determined topics and active participation in spontaneous conversations. The course will reinforce previously learned content and introduce more complex structures and vocabulary to improve communication in French. Cultural awareness will be expanded through examination and discussion of different media sources from French-speaking areas around the world.


Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • think and respond in French when exposed to the language;
  • use French as a medium of learning in a variety of contexts;
  • communicate meaningfully in French to share experiences, express opinions, feelings, and observations;
  • understand and discuss various forms of current media;
  • demonstrate a broadened cultural awareness and understanding of French culture.
 

Mode of Instruction

Instructors will develop the listening and speaking skills of their students by using a wide range of teaching strategies (teacher-centred, student-centred, paired, and grouped activities) to meet the different learning styles of their students. Some discussions will require a written preparation or a report.
 
Students will be expected to prepare on a weekly basis for the upcoming class by reading and studying assigned text material.  In addition to the weekly classes, students should spend a minimum of three hours per week on independent study to further cement their learning.

Modes of Evaluation

To be successful in this subject, you must complete all course work as specified, and achieve an overall grade of 50% or more. For further information on evaluation and academic standing, see the Academic Policy at www.senecac.on.ca/ce/ad-academic_info.
 
Term Work:
The term work will constitute 85% of the final grade.  The instructor’s class schedule will indicate the nature of the weekly activities and assignments, their due dates, and their value.
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the examination. Unless students have been granted an extension in advance, late assignments will be penalized accordingly.  Students must contact faculty in advance of due date to discuss extensions.

Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date. If an assignment is missed due to class absence, any official documentation that might be grounds for arranging a make-up opportunity must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities do not apply to all graded assignments.

Final Examination:
The final in-class examination will constitute 15% of the final grade.

Appeals
