Chinese Language Skills 4

Subject Description
Chinese Language Skills 4 continues to stress language acquisition through student listening activities, involvement in pattern/structure practice and role-playing in skits based on everyday situations where students can express themselves more freely. More complex structures and situations are introduced, while previously learned content is reinforced. By the end of this course all students should be able to read and write up to 450 Chinese characters. Chinese culture is explored throughout the course.

Credit Status
One credit in the Chinese Language Skills Certificate. Not applicable as a general education credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. use Chinese for a variety of purposes and in a variety of contexts, including curriculum areas;
2. understand and share one's experiences with others in Chinese;
3. apply conventions of Chinese appropriate for the purpose, audience, and context;
4. develop collaborative and independent thinking and learning strategies to create practical and imaginative works;
5. demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Chinese culture.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

The outcomes that follow represent the result of an integrated and balanced language course.  As the student progresses, the acquired skills will be developed gradually and naturally through communicative interactions, each at various levels of competence. This Chinese subject will enhance skills in the following areas:

Listening Skills
Students will be able to:

recognize sound patterns (e.g. phonemes, intonation, stress and/or tone)
listen critically and interpret spoken language to communicate with peers and the teacher on familiar topics
interpret the main idea from spoken Chinese instruction and infer meaning through available clues
demonstrate an ability to listen critically for the purpose of acquiring a new language
discriminate between the subtle differences in pronunciation and vocabulary in different Chinese-speaking areas

Speaking Skills
Students will be able to:

use clear pronunciation and accurate intonation, with appropriate gestures
respond appropriately to questions on familiar topics
communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings on familiar topics using vocabulary appropriate to the level
demonstrate confidence and willingness to take risks when expressing ideas, thoughts and feelings
use Chinese to work collaboratively with peers and the instructor

Reading  and Writing Skills
Students will be able to:

read 50 new words in Chinese characters
write 30 new words in Chinese characters

Cultural Understanding
Students will be able to:

express themselves and behave in a manner that reflects respect for Chinese-speaking cultures within our pluralistic society
identify cultural similarities and differences in customs, foods, education, family life and values
recognize and explain the contributions of Chinese speakers to Canada and the world

Mode of Instruction

Instructors develop the listening and speaking skills of their students by using a wide range of teaching strategies (teacher-centred, student-centred, paired, and grouped activities) to meet the different learning styles of their students.
 
Students will be expected to prepare on a weekly basis for the upcoming class by reading and studying assigned text material.  In addition to the weekly classes, students should spend a minimum of three hours per week on independent study to further cement their learning.

Modes of Evaluation

Term Work:
The term work will constitute 85% of the final grade.  The instructor’s class schedule will indicate the nature of the weekly activities and assignments, their due dates, and their value.
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the examination. Unless students have been granted an extension in advance, late assignments will be penalized accordingly.  Students must contact faculty in advance of due date to discuss extensions.

Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date. If an assignment is missed due to class absence, any official documentation that might be grounds for arranging a make-up opportunity must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities do not apply to all graded assignments.

Final Examination:
The final in-class examination will constitute 15% of the final grade.

Appeals

Students must keep all assignments (including drafts and outlines) and exercises until they receive their final grade.
