Subject Title
Environmental Citizenship

Subject Description
Based on the general principles of national citizenship, environmental citizenship goes beyond national borders to emphasize global environmental rights and responsibilities - to focus on both conservation of and planned sustainable use of our planet's resources, as well as the recognition that environmental health is a prerequisite to human health. Environmental citizenship is a personal commitment to learning more about the environment and to taking responsible environmental action. This course is a journey into adopting attitudes and behaviours that foster global environmental responsibility.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain the concept of environmental citizenship and provide examples demonstrating the roles and responsibilities of people within the global ecosystem.

2.Relate the history of environmental trends to contemporary society and to future direction.

3. For example: Explain the relationships between poverty, education, health and environmental sustainability.

4. Identify your day-to-day practices and their impact on the global ecosystem and, in turn, the global ecosystem?s reciprocal impact on you.

5. Explain the concept of ecological footprint and identify ways in which personal environmental impact can be mitigated.

Topic Outline

Students will be exposed to a variety of resources covering a number of topics related to environmental citizenship and human-environment interactions. Students are encouraged to explore as widely and as in depth into these resources and others they find through online or traditional research in order to broaden their experience and understanding.



Mode of Instruction
Online: All class work is completed in a fully online environment. Students do not attend any classes on campus; however, the final exam must be written in-person at the Test Centre.

* Students interested in pursuing  online courses must have strong time management skills and regular access to a home or office computer with an Internet connection and web access.

Modes of Evaluation

To be successful in this course, you must complete all course work as specified and achieve an overall grade of 50% or higher. For further information on evaluation and academic standing, see a copy of the Academic Policy available at Seneca registration offices.

 Term work:
All term work assignments must be completed prior to the time of the final exam or last class.  Students must contact faculty in advance of the assignment due date to discuss the possibility of an extension.  Late assignments may be subject to the awarding of a penalty resulting in a lower grade assigned. 
Make-up opportunities for assignments must also be made in advance of the scheduled due date.  If an assignment is missed due to class absence, official documentation must be submitted to the faculty member on or before the next scheduled class. Make-up opportunities may not apply to all graded assignments.

Final grades will be based on three written assignments (including one group assignment) as well as active participation in the discussion forums. This course has no final exam. Details of the course grading structure are as follows:

Participation in course discussion forums: 20% (4% for each of 5 forums) 20%

Please access the course every week (or more) and keep up with assigned readings. Make sure you participate in online discussions and hand in any assigned work on time. Following these suggestions will increase your chances of success.

Appeals
Students should keep all assignments (including drafts and outlines) and exercises until they receive their final grade. Students may appeal any final grade in a subject or any decision by the College, following the recommendation of a Promotion Committee, with respect to the student's academic standing, continuation or status in a program, School, faculty or the College.
