Subject Title
Opticianry Practicum Level III

Subject Description
During Practicum Level III students complete 500 hours of supervised contact lens fitting and a minimum of 15 soft and 5 rigid contact lens fittings. Of the 500 hours, 10 hours are completed in the Seneca College Vision Clinic located at the Newnham Campus. Procuring suitable placement for practicum is the responsibility of the student.

Credit Status
One credit toward the Opticianry Diploma Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Comply with the Guidelines for Professional Standards of Practice and policies set by the College of Opticians of Ontario.

2. Communicate effectively with clients, supervisors, co-workers, and refractionists to ensure optimum client safety.

3. Follow the accepted protocol for client assessment, interpretation of prescription, ordering and verification of rigid and soft contact lenses, disseminating client instructions and providing follow up care consistent with standards set for the profession.

4. Demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation of instruments, tools and equipment while fabricating and dispensing ophthalmic appliances.

5. Demonstrate proficiency in fitting soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses at the entry to practice level.

6. Create a physical environment conducive to the safe practice of fitting contact lenses.

OPT350 Level II Practicum.  Procuring a placement for practicum is the responsibility of the student.  The College must
approve the placement prior to beginning this level of practicum.
Guidelines for OPT450

The student will complete the following number of contact lens fittings under the supervision of a Registered Optician who is
approved by the College of Opticians of
Ontario, an Optometrist or an Ophthalmologist:

  •     A minimum of 20 soft contact lens fittings of which:
  •     5 fittings must have powers above +/- 4.00D (in both eyes)
  •     3 toric fittings
  •     2 multifocal fittings
  •     A minimum of 5 RGP contact lens fittings
A total of 500 hours of supervised field work are required for this level. The supervising optician must be a Certified Contact
Lens Fitter or be registered with the College of Opticians as a Contact Lens Mentor.  As part of the 500 hours,
a minimum of 10 hours must be completed in the Seneca College Vision Clinic under the supervision of approved program faculty for
the final in-college evaluation.   Students are advised to book clinic hours well in advance as limits are in place for the number
of students permitted to work in the clinic at one time.

Mode of Instruction
Students will work under the supervision of a registered Optician, Optometrist or Ophthalmologist while meeting course requirements.

Modes of Evaluation
The grade for this course will be designated as SATISFACTORY or UNSATISFACTORY.  The criteria for a SATISFACTORY grade include:

  •     Completion of 500 hours of field work logged and signed by the supervisor
  •     Completion of 15 soft contact lens fittings and minimum of 5 rigid gas permeable contact lens fittings signed by the supervisor
  •     A satisfactory rating of overall performance by the supervisor
