Subject Title
Ophthalmic Dispensing & Lensometry Refresher

Subject Description
This refresher subject is available to Registered Intern Opticians who are preparing to take the Registration Examinations. The learner is provided with a review of critical dispensing procedures including P.D., vertex distance and multifocal lens measurement. Lensometry for lens duplication and verification is included.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Take monocular P.D. measurements using a ruler and pen light and a pupilometer

2. Take vertex distance measurements on a frame using a distometer.

3. Accurately measure the fitting height for progressive and segmented bifocal lenses.

4. Determine lens specifications from a series of glazed eyeglasses for the purpose of duplicating the lenses.

5. Determine the specifications of glazed eyeglasses to verify that they meet the Standard Lens Tolerances.

6. Adjust frames of various design on a model

7. Bench aligh plastic, metal, 4 point rimless and nylon mount frames.

PD/ VD Measurement

  • Procedure for ruler and penlight method
  • Monocular and binocular; distance and near
  • Procedure for pupilometer method
  • Procedure for measuring vertex distance
  • Good patient handling / informed  consent
Segment / Fitting Height
  • Flat top and progressive height measurement
  • Plastic, metal, nylon mount frames
  • Good patient handling / informed consent
Lensometry
  • Duplicate lens power for single vision, bifocals and progressives
  • Determine base curve, centre thickness, unwanted prism, segment height
Vertification
  • Neutralize eyeglasses with single vision, bifocal and progressive lenses
  • Compare parameters with NACOR published tolerance chart
  • Verify whether the eyeglasses meet the tolerances
Bench Alignment / Lens Insertion
  • Bench align frames of various design includling metal, plastic, 4 point rimless and nylon mount
  • Replace lenses into a nylon mount frame
Frame Adjustment
  • Adjust metal, plastic, 4 point rimless and nylon mount frames on a model
  • Demonstrate good patient handling / informed consent
Fabrication Theory
  • Review of blank size calculation and layout problems.
