Subject Title
Contact Lens Skills Refresher

Subject Description
This refresher subject is available to Registered Intern Opticians who are preparing to take the Registration Examinations. Students review and utilize procedures for taking critical contact lens measurements using the Radiuscope and related measurement devices.  Contact lens insertion and removal techniques are included.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate procedures for insertion and removal of soft and rigid gas permeable lenses.

2. Demonstrate on a model eversion of the upper eyelid to reveal the palpebral conjunctiva.

3. Measure the back vertex power, base curve and diameter of a RGP lens using the radiuscope, lensometer and diameter gauge.

4. Assess the conditon of various RGP lenses to discern whether they are safe to dispense.

Topic Outline
Lens Insertion / Removal

  • Disinfection protocol for instruments and lenses
  • Insert & remove soft lenses using safe patient handling
  • Insert & remove RGP lenses using safe patient handling
Lid Eversion
  • Evert eyelid using safe patient handling
Radiuscope / Lensometer
  • Measure B.C., back vertex power and diameter of RGP lenses of various design
  • Identify spherical, front toric and back toric RGP lens designs
  • Measure the BVP of a saof contact lens
Lens Verification
  • Using the magnifying loupe, analyze several contact lenses to determine their fitness to dispense
