Healthcare Administration Overview

Subject Description
This subject examines the structure of the health care system and the concept of client-centred care.  The roles of government, funding and provision of health services is examined.  Learn the legal responsibilities of you and your staff and how to meet the standards effectively and efficiently.  Learn the basics of information systems management and the strategic use of information technology.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the origins, development and current structure of the Ontario and the Canadian health care systems.
  2. Explain current issues and challenges in the health care system.
  3. Describe critical issues / concepts such as due diligence, confidentiality, patient rights / advocacy, duty of care and risk management.
  4. Explain the funding framework.
  5. Compare the standards in the Long-Term Care Facility Program Manual to specific operations and functions in the facility.
  6. Design strategies to meet compliance standards and reduce legal risk.
  7. Prepare an action plan to meet accreditation standards.
  8. Identify the legislative documents to which long-term care and retirement facilities adhere.
  9. Describe the roles of the relevant professional associations, internal and external committees and partnerships in a facility.
  10. Compare different information systems.

Modes of Evaluation
Assignments are due on the dates specified. Should extenuating circumstances arise, please contact your instructor prior to the assignment due date so that an appropriate course of action can be established. Late assignments may be subject to a penalty of up to 10% per week and will not generally be accepted beyond two weeks from the due date.

In cases of cheating or plagiarism, the College Academic Policy will prevail. Please ensure that all assignments and reports are properly documented.

Dates for evaluations are specified in the weekly schedule addendum to this outline. The evaluation process may include, but is not limited to, tests, exams, assignments or presentations. Any absences or missed submissions due to medical or other reasons must be supported by medical or other appropriate documentation within one (1) week of the due date. The faculty and program area must be notified immediately in the event of a missed evaluation. Upon acceptance of the documentation, the weighting of the missed deliverable will normally be applied to the final exam.
