Subject Title
Function and Organization in Student Affairs

Subject Description
This subject introduces students to the scope of Student Affairs and Services within college and university settings. Students learn about the historical development of the Student Services profession, how student affairs & services fits into the mission of higher education, and different organizational models. Students will also examine the various departments, functional areas, specialisation, and roles within Student Affairs.

Credit Status
This is a required credit in the Student Affairs and Services Certificate Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe the historical development of Student Services as a profession in the US and Canada.

2. Describe the functional areas within Student Affairs.

3. Explain the objectives of Student Affairs and Services Departments.

4. Differentiate among models of organization placement of Student Affairs and Services within varying institutions.

5. Tie the mission and vision of Student Affairs and Services to the mission and vision of an institution.

6. Identify ethical issues related to Student Affairs practice.

Modes of Evaluation
Grading is based on the following marking scheme:

5 Discussion Assignments (5% each) 25%
2 Major Assignments 45%
Final Examination 30%
Total 100%

The final exam must be written at the Test Centre of the College at which you registered.  If you are unable to do so, please make alternative arrangements through the College at which you registered.

Expected English Competencies: 

The ability to communicate in writing is essential for success in all subjects. All written work must display the following characteristics of clarity and conciseness: 
  • writing is consistent with the rules of English grammar 
  • spelling and punctuation are correct 
  • appropriate vocabulary is used 
  • sentences are structured correctly 
  • main points are supported with specific, relevant examples and reasons
  • work flows logically through supporting statements/paragraphs 
  • work is arranged in correct format (i.e., reports, essays) 
  • layout is attractively displayed
  • external sources are appropriately referred

Up to 10% of the final grade may be deducted on all written work if the above mentioned expected English competencies are not met. 
Promotion Policy

The student must attain a combined grade of at least 50% on the term work and the final exam to pass the course.

Assignments are due on the dates specified.  Begin your assignments early in anticipation of unforeseen problems that may arise in your work or personal life.  Should extenuating circumstances arise, please contact your instructor immediately, prior to when your assignment is due, so an appropriate course of action can be established.  Late assignments may be subject to a penalty of up to 10% per week and will not generally be accepted beyond two weeks after the assignment due date.

The College's Academic Policy will prevail regarding Academic Honesty.

Assignments will be marked on the basis of an appropriate standard of research, content, organizaton of material and presentation.  Assignments are to be grammatically correct and typewritten or prepared by computer.

Students are expected to demonstrate a professional level of communication skills both verbally and in their written work.

All academic policies of the College at which you registered apply.  This includes, but is not limited to, policies related to grading supplemental exams, deferred exams, and accommodations.
