Subject Title
Practice Teaching Practicum 2

Subject Description
This practicum is similar to Practice Teaching - Practicum I. It allows the student to gain additional teaching experience in a different ESL class/stream/level.

Credit Status
This is a required credit in the TESL Certificate Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Independently deliver well-planned lessons, following relevant ESL pedagogical principles to an English as Second Language class.

2. Design lessons and deliver curricula, following relevant ESL pedagogical principles, to adult English as a Second Language classes.

3. Utilize a variety of teaching styles, techniques, materials and curricula.

4. Demonstrate an awareness of his/her strengths as an ESL instructor and demonstrate plans for further professional development.

TSL203, TSL 204, and TSL205(Observations), 206 (or 206 as a corequisite)

Before beginning this practicum, the student must attend a mandatory orientation session.

Mode of Instruction
This supervised practicum consists of 10 hours of practice teaching and 20 hours of other instructional activities in an ESL classroom.  It also includes 3 in-class hours to discuss and reflect on the experience. 

In order to begin practice teaching, students must attend a mandatory orientation session to discuss the practice teaching process and the schedule. Lessons are prepared and delivered through a consultation process with an assigned faculty member (mentor).  The mentor evaluates the student on a number of criteria pertaining to second language pedagogy. 

During the practice teaching practicum, the students must follow the guidance and instruction of the mentors at all times. Lesson plans must be presented to the mentor at least one class in advance.  Lesson planning and delivery and any classroom interaction must follow the appropriate ESL pedgagogical principles. Any student not following these requirements will not be permitted to continue practice teaching and will not receive a successful grade.

Modes of Evaluation
Grading is based on the following marking scheme:

Practice Teaching Components (Practicum Evaluation) 75%
Reflective Paper 25%

Assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the dates specified.  Begin your assignments early in anticipation of unforeseen problems that may arise in your work or personal life.  Should extenuating circumstances arise, please contact your instructor immediately, prior to when your assignment is due, so an appropriate course of action can be established.  Late assignments may be subject to a penalty of up to 10% per week and will not generally be accepted beyond two weeks after the assignment due date.

Students must attain a grade of at least 60% to pass the course.
