In some industries such as marketing, advertising, design, etc., a professional portfolio is a mandatory job search tool.  If you are seeking a career in such industries, significant effort should be made in creating and assembling your portfolio. Your college program may offer courses in creating your professional portfolio.

For other industries, a portfolio may not be essential, but could be helpful in giving you an advantage over other job seekers.

Here are some of the things that can be included in your portfolio:

  • Samples of relevant classroom projects or at work projects
  • Certificates and diplomas
  • Transcripts
  • Awards
  • Thank you letters/Letters of appreciation
  • Recommendation letters

During your interview, you can let the employer know that you have brought your portfolio with you and request permission to share its contents during the interview, when appropriate.
