Teaching English as a Second Language
The ELI offers a two-course TESL program for those wanting to teach English as Second/Foreign language. The integrated program combines theory, practical teaching instruction and immediate integration into authentic teaching classrooms.
In addition to observing EAP (English for Academic Purposes) classes in the English Language Institute, students will have practicum placements in a Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program and/or an EAP / ESL (English as a Second Language) Program within the GTA. This uniquely positions candidates to experience different types of teaching and provides them with connections for employment upon graduation.
There are two levels of certification available at Seneca’s English Language Institute. Students require only TESL 1 to teach overseas. TESL 2 can be completed for advanced training, certification and employment opportunities. TESL 1 or equivalent TESL training from a certified program is required for enrollment in TESL 2. Students who successfully complete TESL 1 are eligible for TESL Canada Standard 1 certification. Students who complete TESL 2 are eligible for TESL Canada Standard 2 and TESL Ontario certification.
