Overview

The International Trade Professional (FITT) program will prepare graduates for an exciting career in the field of international business by providing an overview of the industry and global business sector.

International Trade Professional students will develop the skills to research, analyze, and manage many aspects of a global business. They will gain specialized career expertise, technical trade knowledge and skills in the management of supply chains, as well as practical experience that will enable them to start or further their specific career in international trade. International Business skills obtained in this program will enhance graduate employability and long-term opportunities for advancement in this fast-paced career. This program can be completed in one or two years part-time and gives graduates transferable skills for employment within the international trade industry.

The program is also recognized by the Forum For International Trade Training (FITT) and is a pathway to the professional credentials offered by this worldwide industry association.

Note:

  • This program is currently offered via classroom only.
  • Students must register with the Forum For International Trade Training in order to also become FITT students to complete additional professional credentials.

Career Opportunities

International trade is the exchange of goods and services among nations. The development and manufacturing of goods and the design of services are a primary activity of the global value chain. Students need to be equipped with a global perspective and they require skills that can help the international trade and supply chain industries to deal within a global business environment. The employment opportunities for graduates with training in international business management are broad and there is ongoing demand for employees with specialized skills who can generate revenue or identify inefficiencies in a global business environment.

Entry Requirements

English Requirements

  • English proficiency as indicated in Seneca's Admission Requirements
  • Minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper based) or 88 (internet based with no test below 22),
  • OR IELTS Academic with an overall minimum score of 6.5 (no single test core below 6.0),
  • OR PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) score of 60

TOEFL/IELTS/PTE is not required in case the candidate holds a credential from an English speaking country*

and

  • Academic Credentials:
    • Applicants must have an Ontario College Diploma or Advanced Diploma, Degree from a recognized Canadian University (or International University with original WES credentials equivalencies)

or

  • In lieu of academic credentials:
    • equivalent work-related experience or training
      • (Note: Related work experience with a title of manager or supervisor position with a minimum of 5 years)

This course centres on the strategies and knowledge required for successful international trade transactions. The success and timeliness of these transactions impact an organization's bottom line and are more likely when the organization has knowledge of payment options, risk mitigation strategies, contracts and effective cash flow management, as well as techniques and plans to manage disputes should they arise.

Careful analysis and planning are necessary to choose the most effective market entry strategy for a new venture. The chosen strategy must be successfully implemented and managed, which includes demonstrating cultural competence and complying with applicable local and international laws.

This course examines what, why and how organizations develop, adapt or customize goods and services in relation to international trade. It explores differences in regulatory, legal, cultural and consumer/client requirements that require compliance or that might impact product and service development and adaptation. Organizations must analyze how these differences may impact cost, product design, packaging, labelling, product testing, service delivery, and sales and marketing. They should follow objective and thorough research, development and testing processes that align with their overall business strategies in order to maintain a competitive edge in their international target markets.

This course examines how organizations obtain resources and what they need to know to control and manage logistical systems in relation to international trade.

International Sales and Marketing

This course details considerations an organization must make when promoting and selling products and/or services beyond domestic borders. It examines important concepts related to marketing, sales and e-commerce in countries with different laws, political and economic environments, and cultures. International marketing attempts to position an organization's products and services, brand and communications so they meet the needs and preferences of each target country or region. Marketing activities are designed to generate awareness and demand for the organization's offerings, and sales activities should convert awareness and demand into purchases.

Program Outcomes

  • Conduct situational analysis to determine the current state of an organization and opportunities for growth in the global economy.
  • Prepare international cost and pricing analysis.
  • Analyze and mitigate risks in international trade.
  • Negotiate and plan for successful international business transactions.
  • Assess payment risks and involve the use of an export credit agency to finance and mitigate commercial risks.
  • Interpret cash flow statements to report to management.
  • Recognize the types of disputes in international trade.
  • Plan and implement international market entry by following international law and ethics considerations.
  • Gain new perspectives by acknowledging international cultural competencies.
  • Develop products and services that are exportable from concept ideas to commercialization in the international market place.
  • Understand how to manage trade documentation.
  • Recognized when it is best to procure or outsource in the global marketplace.
  • Analyze inventory management and international distribution.
  • Explore how international marketing attracts global customers.
  • Negotiate through different sales channels and ecommerce technology to access international markets.

Completion

Recognition of Achievement

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Recognition of Achievement Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Recognition of Achievement will be sent to you electronically.

FITT

Seneca College & FITT Equivalence Chart

The Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) recognizes Seneca College courses as educational equivalents to FITT's industry-validated FITTskills courses. Application for equivalent status may be made to FITT after the completion of all eight courses.

FITT Accredited Program

Our FITT accredited program is a highly practical, hands-on series of courses that focuses on the fundamental aspects of international business. Upon successful completion of our program, including completing two (2) FITT assessments, students will be able to transfer their credits to FITT to receive a FITT Diploma in International Trade. This Diploma fulfills the educational requirement for obtaining the CITP designation.

Faculty who teach within this program are well-respected professionals in their field and bring a wealth of expertise to the classroom setting. Each represents the private or public sectors including: entrepreneurs, representatives from business, government or private consultants.
