ABA100 - Autism

This course provides a brief overview of the characteristics, causes, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To best understand the complexity of ASD, students will learn topics with a developmental perspective, and will be provided with information about the social, linguistic, and behavioural development of both typically developing children, and children with ASD. We will begin in the early years, and progress through adolescence and into adulthood. For example, the development of social understanding, empathy, play, and language, will be addressed across the lifespan. As well, children with ASD live within a larger family unit, and their unique role will be taken into account. Lastly, we will explore a number of community resources available for individuals with ASD.
