English As a Second Language (ESL)

Seneca's Speaking English and ESL Writing Skills courses are designed to support you in achieving your academic, personal, or professional English goals. Additionally, we offer courses in Accent Reduction, Conversation Strategies, and Grammar.

Our ESL934 – Composition IV – serves as a pathway to COM101, Seneca's core communications course for certificate and diploma programs. Students who have successfully completed ESL934 may enroll directly in COM101 and, in many cases, meet Seneca program entry requirements.

This ESL chart shows the courses you need to complete in order to progress through the different English levels available at Seneca.

English Assessment & Placement

Register for the English Assessment and Placement (ELL100) as a first step to your studies if you:

  1. Need to determine if you meet part-time program or course language requirements and which English courses, if any, are needed.
  2. Are interested in joining our ESL or college-level English courses for personal or professional development.

The assessment includes an individual speaking interview and a one-hour invigilated academic writing task. Dictionaries and other language aids are not permitted. The assessment is designed for all incoming students, regardless of first language, educational or professional background.

Writing / Grammar Skills

Learn how to write effectively in both workplace and academic settings, from simple paragraphs to building a formal essay. Courses build on knowledge gained in previous levels. Successful completion of ESL934 offers direct enrolment in COM101/COM111, a required course in many of Seneca's certificate and diploma programs.

Speaking Skills

Learn to use conversational grammar in everyday situations by developing your speaking, listening and decision-making skills. Our speaking courses are designed to help you succeed in your postsecondary studies.

Recognition of Achievement
