Why did you choose to study at Seneca?

I chose to study at Seneca because I appreciated the breadth of its curriculum. I felt that the comprehensive education and combination of professional knowledge with practical skills would really prepare me for a career in law enforcement. When I first began my studies, I spoke with many upper-semester students who were studying at the college as well. They were able to impart really valuable insights and advice to me. Additionally, as I met my professors during Orientation and began to access first-hand industry knowledge from them, I knew that Seneca was the right choice for me.

 

How would you describe your experience at Seneca?

My experience at Seneca was unforgettable. Through the Police Foundations program, I gained knowledge and skills that are crucial for my field. I learned the importance of building authentic relationships with classmates and instructors as they may very well become my colleagues or even partner in a patrol unit one day.

Something else that I valued about Seneca was its diversity. During my time as a student, I was exposed to new cultures, experiences, and friendships that may not have been possible otherwise. It was also empowering and uplifting to see an equal ratio between males and females in my program – especially as law enforcement has historically been male-dominated.

 

What influenced your decision to continue your education after completing your diploma?

It’s simple – I was driven to accomplish more. I wanted to make sure that I pursued further education so that I would be able to access greater opportunities in the future. I have always enjoyed school and learning new things. I believe that transferring to a degree program will be a worthwhile investment in my own future.

What are you up to now?

I am currently studying at the University of Guelph-Humber, completing my Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Justice Studies, while also completing a second diploma in Community and Justice Services.

 

How did your Seneca program prepare you for your degree program?

My Seneca program provided me with the building blocks and tools I needed to succeed in my current studies. My experience at college helped to ease my transition to university, in that I was able to better adapt to the academic demands of a degree program.

 

From experience, what do you think the value of having both a diploma and a degree is?

I believe that having two diplomas and a degree will help demonstrate to employers that I possess both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. I have been exposed to hands-on learning experiences during my diploma programs and therefore acquired demonstrable skills that I am able to put to practice each day. Whereas my degree has given me theoretical knowledge which has challenged me to think and approach learning in an entirely different way. Together, my combination of education makes me a better-rounded learner and hopefully a more valuable candidate for future job opportunities.  

Any words of advice to students who are currently in the program you graduated out of at Seneca and considering transferring to a degree program?

To students currently in the Police Foundations program, my advice is: physical fitness in combination with your knowledge are requirements for the selection process from Police Services in Ontario. So practice and prepare as best as you can. It will play a significant role in your policing career.

What knowledge do you know now that you wish you knew before completing a degree transfer?
I only wish that I had learned about diploma-to-degree pathway options sooner. It would have helped to have known what pathways options were available to be upon graduation earlier so that I could have a clear goal(s) in mind. So my advice to current students would be: do your research early on!

 

What are your plans for the future – short-term and long-term?

My short-term goal is to complete my studies and my long-term goal is to establish a successful career in law enforcement.
