Sun-Kyung (Sunny) Yi is an independent documentary filmmaker, journalist and author. Her films have garnered national and international awards and are broadcasted worldwide. As the first Canadian journalist to be granted unprecedented access to North Korea, Sunny visited the country in 1994 and produced a three-part series for CBC Radio’s IDEAS and wrote Inside the Hermit Kingdom (Key Porter Books). She holds an MA in History from York University, and is currently working on her PhD. In 2009, Sunny established the Documentary Filmmaking Institute at Seneca to train and mentor future generations of storytellers. She is now the program co-ordinator for Seneca’s recently launched Documentary and Non-fiction Media Production graduate certificate.
