The Role of ECE in All Day Kindergarten

Subject Description
This workshop will provide an overview of the Full - Day Early Learning Kindergarten Program initiated in the Ontario school system commencing September 2010. The participants will explore the role of the Early Childhood Educator as a working partner with the public school teacher, referred to as the Early Learning- Kindergarten Team. The Ministry of Education's Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum, the ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today) document, the How Does learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years document and the College of Early Childhood Educator's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Credit Status
Recognition of Achievement for completion of all 6 workshops.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Understand the requirements of the Ministry of Education's Early Learning Program (full- day kindergarten).

2. Apply the CECE Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for ECEs working with families and children.

3. Practice professionally as an ECE in a collaborative teaching environment that respects the children, staff and families.

4. Begin to understand the full day kindergarten curriculum, E.L.E.C.T. document, and the Hoes Does Learning Happen? document

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.

Prerequisite(s)
Participants must  have a current ECE diploma or are currently students in an Early Childhood Education diploma program at a recognized college or university.

Topic Outline
Participants will examine the role of the Early Childhood Educator in the Ministry of Ontario’s new ELP (Early Learning Programs) developing an understanding of the challenges and demands this new role will require. They will be provided with suggestions for positive and productive best practices.
